Basic Trail Markings used by the Las Vegas Hash House Harriers (Viva - Las Vegas!)

HASH:

The basic mark used by the hare. A blob of flour means that you are on a trail, but not necessarily the correct, or true trail.

CHECK:

Trail may change direction at this point. Here pack members spread out and look for a new trail. The new trail will begin in about 100-yards in any direction. There may be one or more false trails from the check.

TRUE TRAIL:

Only the hare can make this mark on trail. If you see this arrow with three lines across it's shaft, follow it in the direction indicated.

FALSE TRAIL:

Three parallel lines across trail indicate that the trail is false. Hounds should return to the last check and once again look for the true trail.

HOUND ARROW:

The most common place to find a hound arrow is at a check. This mark, left by a member of the pack, indicates the member's direction taken. Hound arrows may be made from chalk, sticks, rocks, or random debris. Follow these at your own peril!

BEER CHECK:

This mark indicates that there are beverages within 100-yards or so. The purpose of a beer check is two-fold; to provide refreshments and to regroup the pack.

BEER NEAR:

This trail marking makes hasher's hearts swell, and provides that much needed last burst of energy! When you see this mark, you are within one-quarter mile of the end of the trail, also known as the On-In.

TURKEY/EAGLE SPLIT:

At this point trail splits into a segment which is easy (turkey) and a segment which is difficult (eagle). The two segments will eventually rejoin somewhere before the trail ends, or at the end itself.

ON-ACROSS:

This mark indicates that the pack must cross some type of obstacle. Examples may include a body of water, busy street, or perhaps even a mine field.

CHECK BACK:

Hares generally use this mark to keep the pack together. The number inside of the circle tells FRB's how many hash marks to go back, then begin checking for a new true trail.

ON-IN:

You made it! That's it! Finito! When you see the On-In trail mark, you're at the end of the line. Go to the coolers and get yourself a well-deserved beverage. Your kit bag should be lined-up somewhere nearby.

Socialize, cut loose, enjoy yourself. Listen to other hashers as they make-up bullshit stories about today's trail. Hell, make-up your own bullshit story! It only has to be 10-percent true when you're at the hash.

Soon Circle will begin. In this fun ceremony, hash songs fill the air, hashers are recognized for both honorable and dubious hash behavior from that day's trail, such as coming in either first or last, being overly-competative while on trail, or for doing something just plain silly.

If you are new to the Vegas Hash, you'll be expected to share a song, tell a joke, or show a body part at your first circle.

Note: There is usually warm food provided following the afternoon trails.
